Lesson 13  ·  Integration Swedish — one of the most-used lessons in real life.
👋 From my experience: The first time I ordered at a Swedish restaurant, I panicked and pointed at the menu. It worked, but I felt silly. Swedish restaurant culture is relaxed and English is almost always fine — but knowing the food words means you actually understand what you're eating, and dietary phrases are things you'll use constantly if you have any restrictions at all.

Time to complete: 12–15 minutes  ·  Phrases learned: 20+ food and restaurant phrases

Ordering at a Restaurant

SwedishEnglish
Ett bord för två, tack.A table for two, please.
Kan jag få se menyn? Can I see the menu?
Vad rekommenderar ni?What do you recommend?
Jag skulle vilja beställa…I would like to order…
Kan jag få notan, tack? Can I have the bill, please?
Smaklig måltid!Enjoy your meal!
Det var jättegott! That was really tasty!
Ursäkta, kan vi få mer vatten?Excuse me, can we get more water?
💡 Tap water tip: You can always ask for free tap water at Swedish restaurants — "Kan jag få kranvatten?" It's completely normal and nobody will look at you strangely for asking.

Dietary Requirements

SwedishEnglish
Jag är vegetarian.I am vegetarian.
Jag är vegan.I am vegan.
Jag är allergisk mot nötter.I am allergic to nuts.
Jag är allergisk mot laktos.I am allergic to lactose.
Jag kan inte äta gluten.I can't eat gluten.
Innehåller det här skaldjur?Does this contain shellfish?
Finns det något vegetariskt? Is there anything vegetarian?
Utan lök, tack.Without onion, please.
🌟 Good to know: Sweden takes allergies seriously — most menus mark allergens clearly, and staff are trained to check ingredients carefully if you ask. Don't hesitate to be specific; it's completely normal here.

Husmanskost — Classic Swedish Home Cooking

🍖
Köttbullar
Meatballs, usually with cream sauce & lingonberry

💡 Bigger spreads: Smörgåsbord is a large buffet-style spread with many small dishes, and julbord is its Christmas version — ham, herring, meatballs and more, usually eaten slowly over several courses in a set order (fish first, then cold cuts, then hot dishes).

Fika Vocabulary, Deepened

FikabrödFika pastries / baked goods, generally
KanelbulleCinnamon bun — the fika icon
KardemummabulleCardamom bun

Ordering — A Conversation

Waiter: Hej! Vad får det lov att vara?
Hello! What can I get you? (polite phrasing)
Ravi: Hej! Jag är vegetarian — finns det något vegetariskt?
Hi! I'm vegetarian — is there anything vegetarian?
Waiter: Absolut, vi har en vegetarisk pasta idag.
Absolutely, we have a vegetarian pasta today.
Ravi: Perfekt, jag tar den. Och kan jag få kranvatten också?
Perfect, I'll take that. And can I also get tap water?
Waiter: Självklart. Smaklig måltid!
Of course. Enjoy your meal!

New phrase: Vad får det lov att vara? = a polite, slightly old-fashioned way of asking "what would you like?"

✏️ Quick Practice

1. How do you ask for the bill?
Your answer...Kan jag få notan, tack?
2. How do you say "I am allergic to nuts"?
Your answer...Jag är allergisk mot nötter.
3. What is "köttbullar"?
Your answer...Meatballs — usually served with cream sauce and lingonberry jam.
4. What does "påtår" mean, and why is it useful to know?
Your answer...A free coffee refill — very common at Swedish cafés, so it's worth knowing you can ask for one.

Your Challenge This Week

🎯 Try this: Order something entirely in Swedish this week — even just "En kaffe och en kanelbulle, tack." If you have any dietary requirements, practice saying them out loud once before you go, so it feels natural when you actually need it.
