📚 Swedish for Expats — Advanced Lessons
Advanced Lesson 12  ·  Integration Swedish — almost through the advanced track!
👋 From my experience: My first Swedish payslip looked like a foreign language even after months of lessons — bruttolön, nettolön, skattetabell, semesterersättning. Nobody explains these words to you; you're just expected to understand your own paycheck. This lesson covers exactly what you'll see at the bank and on that payslip.

Time to complete: 12–15 minutes  ·  Words learned: Banking, payslip and digital ID vocabulary

Choosing a Bank

Sweden's major banks all offer broadly similar services. Most require a personnummer to open a full account, though a few offer limited accounts before you have one.

🏦

Swedbank

Sweden's largest retail bank. Often the easiest for newcomers to open an account with.

🏛️

Handelsbanken

Branch-focused with strong local relationships — good if you want in-person service.

💳

SEB

Popular with professionals and expats working at larger companies.

🏢

Nordea

Large Nordic bank with a solid English-language app and support.

💱

Wise / Revolut

Useful bridge accounts before you have a personnummer, and great for sending money abroad.

💡 What to bring: Passport, personnummer (or proof you've applied), and your job contract or proof of address. Book an appointment online first — most banks don't accept walk-ins for new accounts.

Reading Your Payslip — Tap to Decode

Here's a simplified Swedish payslip. Tap any line to see what it means.

Bruttolön38 000 kr
📖 Bruttolön = gross salary, before tax is deducted.
Skatt (enligt skattetabell)−9 500 kr
📖 Skatt = tax, deducted automatically according to your municipality's skattetabell (tax table).
Nettolön28 500 kr
📖 Nettolön = net salary — what actually lands in your account.
SemesterersättningIncluded
📖 Semesterersättning = holiday pay, an extra percentage on top of your salary that funds paid vacation.
Utbetalas25:e varje månad
💡 Key insight: Sweden uses PAYE (pay-as-you-earn) — your employer calculates and deducts tax automatically based on the skattetabell for your municipality. You almost never have to calculate your own tax month to month.

BankID & Swish — Your Digital Life in Sweden

TermWhat it is
BankIDYour digital identity — used to log into government sites, sign contracts, and verify who you are online
Mobilt BankIDThe app version of BankID, installed on your phone
SwishInstant mobile payments between bank accounts — used constantly for splitting bills, paying friends, and small purchases
SwishnummerThe phone number linked to your Swish account
Legitimera digTo verify your identity — usually with BankID
🌟 Expat essential: You cannot get BankID without a personnummer and a Swedish bank account first — the three are linked in sequence. Once you have BankID, almost everything else in Sweden (tax, healthcare, housing applications, Swish) becomes dramatically easier.

At the Bank — A Conversation

Ravi: Hej, jag skulle vilja öppna ett bankkonto.
Hello, I would like to open a bank account.
Bank clerk: Har du ett personnummer?
Do you have a personnummer?
Ravi: Ja, här är det. Och mitt passnummer också.
Yes, here it is. And my passport number too.
Bank clerk: Perfekt. Vill du ha ett lönekonto och ett sparkonto?
Perfect. Would you like a salary account and a savings account?
Ravi: Ja tack, båda två.
Yes please, both of them.
Bank clerk: Bra. Du får ditt bankkort inom en vecka.
Great. You'll get your bank card within a week.

New words: passnummer = passport number · båda två = both of them · inom en vecka = within a week

✏️ Quick Practice

1. What is the difference between "bruttolön" and "nettolön"?

2. What do you need before you can get BankID?
Your answer...A personnummer and a Swedish bank account.
3. How do you say "I would like to open a bank account"?
Your answer...Jag skulle vilja öppna ett bankkonto.
4. What is Swish mainly used for?
Your answer...Instant mobile payments between bank accounts — splitting bills, paying friends, small purchases.

Your Challenge This Week

🎯 Try this: Pull up your own payslip (or a sample one online) and try to find bruttolön, skatt, and nettolön without translating. If you don't have a Swedish payslip yet, look up your bank's account-opening page and see how many of this lesson's words you can already recognise.
