Present-tense verbs help you talk about everyday routines, what you do, and what is happening now. The useful news is that Swedish verbs generally use the same present form for every person.

THE KEY IDEA

Use the same verb form with jag, du, han, hon, vi and de. Many verbs form the present tense with -ar, -er or -r; learn the form with each verb.

Examples you can use

Read the Swedish sentence first, then check the English meaning.

SwedishEnglish
Jag arbetar hemma.I work from home.
Du talar svenska.You speak Swedish.
Hon kommer klockan åtta. She arrives at eight.
Vi går till jobbet. We go to work.
De bor i Malmö.They live in Malmö.
Expat tip

Do not add an English-style ending for he or she. It is jag arbetar and hon arbetar — not “hon arbetars”.
