The Swedish present perfect often connects a past event to the present. It is useful for experiences, recent results and situations where the exact time is not the focus.
Form it with har + supine: Jag har ätit (I have eaten), Jag har sett filmen (I have seen the film). The supine form must be learned with the verb.
Read the Swedish sentence first, then check the English meaning.
| Swedish | English |
|---|---|
| Jag har bott här i två år. | I have lived here for two years. |
| Har du ätit? | Have you eaten? |
| Vi har redan sett den. | We have already seen it. |
| Hon har varit i Göteborg. | She has been to Gothenburg. |
Compare a finished past time with a present connection: Jag åt klockan tolv (I ate at twelve) and Jag har ätit (I have eaten). Swedish usage does not match English in every situation.
