Most Swedish nouns use either en or ett. There is no perfect rule that predicts every noun, so learn the article as part of the vocabulary item.

THE KEY IDEA

Think of the article as part of the word: learn en stol, not just stol; learn ett hus, not just hus.

Examples you can use

Read the Swedish sentence first, then check the English meaning.

SwedishEnglish
en boka book
en väna friend
en lägenhetan apartment
ett husa house
ett barna child
ett jobba job
Expat tip

When you save vocabulary, write the article beside the noun. Avoid trying to memorize long lists of nouns without en or ett.

QUICK PRACTICE

Check your understanding

Which article belongs with “hus” (house)?
Show answer and explanation

ett hus — The standard form is ett hus. The article must be learned with the noun.
