Swedish often adds the definite ending directly to a noun instead of putting a separate word like “the” in front of it.

THE KEY IDEA

A common pattern is en bok → boken and ett hus → huset. Plurals have several patterns, so learn common forms as you meet them.

Examples you can use

Read the Swedish sentence first, then check the English meaning.

SwedishEnglish
en bil → bilena car → the car
ett äpple → äppletan apple → the apple
en bok → böckera book → books
en lägenhet → lägenheteran apartment → apartments
ett barn → barna child → children
Expat tip

The plural is not always predictable from the article. For new vocabulary, record the definite and plural forms when they are useful: en bok, boken, böcker.
